Rumeli Fortress
Rumeli Fortress; Istanbul had been under many sieges before the siege of the city by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453. The Roman walls surrounding the city were able to stop all previous sieges. During long sieges, the needs of the city were reinforced by sea.
Rumeli Fortress was built before the siege of the city in order to prevent aid and reinforcements from the Black Sea during the siege of Istanbul, opposite an earlier Turkish fortress on the opposite shore. This military structure was completed in 1452 in an incredibly short time of 4 months.
This largest and strongest fortress of the entire middle age lost its strategic importance following the conquest of Istanbul by the Turks in 1453. This beautiful example of classical Turkish castle architecture adorns the Bosphorus with all its majesty.
After the repairs made in the 1950s, it was converted into a museum. It is used as an open-air theater in the citadel in Istanbul festivals held every year. The city walls of Istanbul are the city walls around Istanbul built during the Byzantine period.
The walls surrounding Istanbul were built starting from the 5th century in history, and were overhauled 4 times with demolition and rebuilding. Its last construction is after 408 BC. At the time of Theodorsis, the walls of Istanbul stretched from Sarayburnu to Ayvansaray along the shore of the Golden Horn, from this side and along the Marmara coast to Yedikule, from Yedikule to Topkapı, from Topkapı to Ayvansaray.
Stating that works are carried out by IMM Heritage teams in thirty-five historical centers in Istanbul, including Ottoman tombs and Byzantine structures, Oktay Özel stated that among these, Anadolu Hisarı will be opened to the public as a museum and cultural area, together with its surroundings.
Marking the end of summer for this, Oktay Özel added that the cultural area and museum works will be completed by the middle of 2023.
